Deep fried Maple leaves?

Who knew you could eat maple leaves, apparently you can.  Not only that, Maple leaves are considered a delicacy in Japan.  But there is a catch, these are not just any Maple leaves, the leaves belong to the Acer palmatum, or Japanese Maple tree (the Japanese just call it momiji tree) .

This tree is found in certain parts of Japan, North/South Korea, Mongolia and Russia.  The typical dessert the Japanese make with this leaves is called “momiji” or “nomiji tempura.”  The images below show you more, so see on.
